5 Home Repairs Every Kauai Homeowner Should Do Before Rainy Season
By Brandon Herrero | Pacific Home Repairs

Living on Kauai means loving the rain โ until it starts finding its way into places it shouldn't. The North Shore can see over 400 inches of rain a year, and even the drier South Shore gets its share of tropical downpours. If your home isn't prepared, rainy season can turn a small problem into a costly one fast.
Here are five repairs worth taking care of before the rain arrives.
1. Check and Reseal Your Caulking
Caulking around windows, doors, tubs, sinks, and exterior trim breaks down over time โ especially in Hawaii's heat and humidity. Once it cracks or pulls away, water gets in. And in Kauai's climate, moisture inside walls or around windows leads to mold, rot, and structural damage quickly. Walk around your home and look for caulking that's cracked, shrinking, or pulling away from the surface. If it looks worn, it's time to replace it.
2. Inspect Your Window and Door Screens
Rainy season also means more bugs looking for shelter. Torn or ill-fitting screens won't keep them out. Beyond bugs, damaged screen frames can let wind-driven rain push moisture into your home through gaps around the edges. Check every screen for tears, bent frames, or poor fit.
3. Look at Your Exterior Door Hardware
Humidity and salt air are hard on door hardware. Hinges corrode, latches stick, and weather stripping wears out. A door that doesn't close or seal properly is an open invitation for rain to come inside โ especially during heavy wind-driven storms. Test every exterior door. If it's sticking, not latching cleanly, or has gaps around the frame, get it sorted before the wet season hits.
4. Clear Your Gutters
Kauai's trees are beautiful โ but they fill gutters fast. Clogged gutters cause water to back up and overflow, which leads to water pooling around your foundation, running down exterior walls, and eventually finding its way inside. If you haven't had your gutters cleaned recently, do it before rainy season.
5. Address Any Drywall Cracks or Damage Now
If you already have small cracks, soft spots, or staining on your walls or ceiling, rainy season will make them worse. Water finds the path of least resistance โ and existing damage is exactly that. Get drywall issues patched and sealed before the rain comes.
A Simple Checklist Before Rainy Season
These aren't big projects โ but they make a real difference in how your home holds up through the wet months. If you've got a list of things to take care of before rainy season, I'm happy to work through it all in one visit.
